AITECH Workshop with Children from Marjan Kindergarten: Discovering AI through Play, Robots, and Unplugged Activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, the Department of Informatics once again welcomed our dear guests from Marjan Kindergarten<\/strong>, accompanied by Klara Petri\u0107<\/strong> and Ana Lazarevi\u0107<\/strong>, leaders of playgroups for potentially gifted children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n On this occasion, we held a workshop on artificial intelligence using the CS Unplugged approach and the Nao robot<\/strong>. The children were introduced to the basic ideas of artificial intelligence through the \u201cBrain in the Jar\u201d workshop, where they had the opportunity to \u201clook inside the robot\u2019s brain\u201d and explore, in a simple and age-appropriate way, what artificial intelligence is and how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The workshop was led by our teachers Petra Crmari\u0107<\/strong>, Dino Neja\u0161mi\u0107<\/strong>, and Monika Mladenovi\u0107<\/strong>. In addition, the children learned how a computer sorts numbers, with the help of our students Rebeka Ali\u0107<\/strong>, Leona Bari\u0161i\u0107<\/strong>, and Sandra Brakus<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n They also explored how computers represent images and created their own \u201ccomputer\u201d pictures. Using tablets, they discovered augmented reality by observing 3D animals that \u201ccame to life\u201d on printed images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The visit combined play, curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. Through age-appropriate activities, the children discussed the differences between human and artificial intelligence, learned that AI can also make mistakes, and discovered why human reasoning, common sense, and a critical attitude remain essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The children themselves described the visit in the most wonderful way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, how was it for us at the Faculty of Science? First, we solved a quiz Sometimes, AI needs something <\/p>\n\n\n\n Then we pretended <\/p>\n\n\n\n We also played with a robot named Nao, <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n We are especially grateful for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and wonderful reflections after the visit. Encounters like this show how important it is to introduce children to informatics, computational thinking, and artificial intelligence from an early age \u2014 through play, dialogue, creativity, and exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The workshop was held as part of the project \u201cArtificial Intelligence for Future Technical Education and Industrial Competitiveness\u201d (AITECH), IP-UNIST-48, funded by the European Union \u2013 NextGenerationEU under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021\u20132026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
As always \u2014 extremely interesting and inspiring,
and we learned many new things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and learned how that famous AI works.
We talked about how our human intelligence
is different from artificial intelligence,
and how AI is not all-powerful either \u2014
it can also make mistakes
when we ask it something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to be repeated several times,
while we use our intelligence,
common sense,
and critical thinking
to decide whether everything is clear
or perhaps a little unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
that we knew Chinese \u2014
we remembered interesting Chinese symbols
and combined them into words
such as yellow hat, green apple,
and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
programmed an image by colouring zeros,
and enjoyed a very precise sorting game
that always knew
which number was bigger
and which was smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
